September Wrap-Up: A Month of Me Basically Eating Too Many Sweets + a Christmas Party??

monthly wrap up

Oh man, September, what a month. College has been super crazy and busy, which is why I’ve been pretty absent this past month. And thus why I stress ate A LOT and ate way too many desserts (I know there’s a freshman 15, but I feel like I’m on my way to my own junior 15, whoops).

All of the books I read in September were for class or book club, but now that I’ve gotten back into the swing of things at college I’m hoping I’ll be able to adjust my schedule to squeeze in more reading for fun! (not that my Jane Austen reading isn’t enjoyable, but I miss my fantasy & YA books!)

BOOKS I READ:

1. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

2461713

Rating: 4 stars

This was my second Jane Austen book and it was so much fun! Well, fun and slow at times. Oh my gosh though, I didn’t realize how truly sassy Jane Austen was until I began reading this book with my class!

2. The Sense and Sensibility Screenplay and Diaries by Emma Thompson

10305722

Rating: 4 stars

And of course after my Jane Austen class finished Sense and Sensibility, we had to watch the movie adaptation and then read about it’s production. This book was super interesting and insightful; I didn’t realize how stressful and complex it was to film and produce a movie!

3. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

15749186

Rating: 3.5 stars

My second time reading this book this year! Lol, I literally read this book for the first time at the end of July, but my book club read it for September so of course I had to read it again! Even though I remembered most of the book, I still had a fun time reading it again!

4. Hybrid Creatures: Stories by Matthew Baker

35412466

Rating: 3.5 stars

Loved the concept of this book. Wasn’t a big fan of the first two stories though. I liked the third one and fell IN LOVE with the last one though. The author not only visited my college in September but also my fiction writing class. He was super nice, so I feel a little bit bad not rating this book higher.

OCTOBER TBR:

  • The Hate U Give- My book club is reading this book this month so I will FINALLY be hopping on this bandwagon. Also, I’m super psyched to see the movie later this month after reading it!
  • Station Eleven- The author of this book is visiting my college at the beginning of November and since I don’t really have a lot of time to read outside of homework, I should probably get a head start on this book and start it this month.

It also sounds like I might buddy read They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera at the end of October/beginning of November but the details are still being worked out.

RANDOM LIFE UPDATES:

  • I didn’t die under all my homework, yay me! (thank you coffee and naps!)
  • I went to a Christmas party this month??? Yes, you heard that correctly. My friend’s friend has been in a Christmas mood for awhile so they finally decided to appease him by having a party!
    • We had pizza, decorated cookies, played telestrations, drank hot chocolate, listened to Christmas music, and watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation! It was a lot of fun and surprisingly less weird than I thought it would be.
  • I actually had a book haul! (I love buying used books from Thriftbooks!) I posted about it last week and you can read about it here!
  • My roommate and I had lots of movie nights! We watched The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and Underworld: Blood Wars (even though neither of us had seen the previous movies).
    • Even though it’s not a movie, our goal for October is to get started watching Avatar: The Last Airbender! My roommate has never seen the show so we’re going to watch it together. (ALSO apparently Netflix is going to reboot the show and make it live-action? Not sure how I feel about this but I’m curious to see how it will turn out)

How was your September? What books did you read? Do you have a sweet tooth and/or stress eat like me?

September Book Haul: I love buying used books!

I’m posting a book haul??? I know; I’m shocked too. Usually I never acquire enough books in a month to write a post about them (outside of school books, I’ve only been buying about one book every month or so this past year).

But this month I actually spent money on books! (I have no regrets) Not only did I place an order on Thriftbooks, but I also went shopping with some friends and pick up a book at both the local book store and the second hand shop at the library! I also won a free book! *dances around excitedly*

  • Station Eleven- Emily St. John Mandel is visiting my campus in November and omg I’m so excited because my class gets to have lunch with her! This of course means I need to have this book read by then!
  • Truthwitch- I’ve actually already read this book but I want to reread it so I can continue on with the series. Not to mention, the library book shop was selling it for 50 cents, so how could I not buy it?
  • To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before- My book club’s first read this fall! We actually just had our meeting on Monday, so I’ve already read this book! (twice now actually because I read it for the first time in July)
  • World After- Bought this on Thriftbooks because my cart was only at $9 and I needed to spend at least $10 to get free shipping. I also already owned the first book so I bought the 2nd & 3rd book to complete the series.
  • End of Days- Same goes with this book. 😆 Loved this series and I totally need to reread it!
  • All the Light We Cannot See- Reading this for my book club in November! And because I’m co-President, I used this as an excuse to purchase all the books we read. 😀

I WON PHYSICAL ARC OF THE GILDED WOLVES THROUGH A GOODREADS GIVEAWAY!! Technically, I don’t have it on me right now because my copy was sent to my house and I’m currently away at college but I have fall break coming up next week so this book will be in my hands soon! 🙂

Did you purchase any books this month? Have you ever won a Goodreads giveaway? Have any book-buying sprees planned for the future?

Top Ten Tuesday: Fall TBR

TTT pretty design(15)

This week’s TTT topic is “Books On My Fall 2018 TBR”. I’ve been so excited for this post because I love making TBRs (even tho I rarely stick to them, shhh)! I’m feeling fairly optimistic for this list though because a lot of the books I listed are ones that I need to read for my college’s book club (which I’m co-president of, so I really have to read them, lol).

For those of you who don’t know:

“Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.”

(This quote comes directly from the blog, That Artsy Reader Girl)

1. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

15749186

I literally already read this during the summer (July 31st to be precise), but my book club voted to read this book this semester, so I guess I’m reading it again… 😁

2. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

32075671

It’s time guys; I’m finally going to hop on the bandwagon and read this book! I’m been meaning to read this for awhile now, but because I’m primarily a fantasy reader, I rarely find myself in the mood for a contemporary. Also, I’m so psyched for the movie to release it October!

3. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

20170404

My college town is doing a community read of this book this fall and I really want to participate! The author is also visiting in November and I’ll be required to attend the event for my fiction writing class and I don’t want to be clueless when I go!

4. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

18143977

Another book club pick! I’ve heard so many good things about this book and I can’t wait to see what the story is about! I already have it ordered through Thriftbooks!

5. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

23437156

It’s finally happening, guys. I’m finally going to read this book, curtsy of my college’s book club, once again. We’re reading this in late November/ early December, so hopefully I’ll be able to finish my reread of the Grishaverse Trilogy by then (I’m on the 3rd book, so I really hope it doesn’t take me 3 months to finish it).  😁

~~~
Those are the main 5 books I’m hoping to read this fall, but here are a few more I would also love to read (tho it’s very unlikely because college is crazy right now):
(Also, I know that technically I could have left this list at 5 books but I just can’t bring myself to write a TTT post that doesn’t include 10 books)
6. Archival Quality by Ivy Noelle Weir & Steenz
36140710
I won this graphic novel from a Goodreads Giveaway back in March and I still haven’t read it, yikes, so I should really get around to it. Plus, I think reading a quick graphic novel will help me feel more accomplished during the craziness of college. 😀
7. Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo
29749085
Lol, another Leigh Bardugo book. 😁 Also, whoops, this was on my Summer TBR TTT post too. My aunt loaned me this book in the spring and I am determined to get it read soon so I can return it to her (not to mention that I’ve been hearing great things about this book)!
8. P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han
20698530
Of course, after seeing the movie and having read the book twice, I’ll really need to continue on with this series! Not to mention, I think a cute, fluffy contemporary will be a great way to offset the craziness of college right now!
9. They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
33385229
I’ve owned this book for like a year now, and I even have it signed, but for some reason I still haven’t read it! Also, I still have yet to read an Adam Silvera book and I really need to change that!
10. The Lost Sisters by Holly Black
40772063
Um, how did I not know about this The Cruel Prince novella until recently? I literally never read novellas that are only offered as e-books, but you better bet I’ll chuck out money for this e-book when it releases on October 2nd.
What books are you guys hoping to read this fall? Have you read any of the books I mentioned?
If you participated in TTT this week, feel free to link up your posts in the comments below, I would love to read them!
WWW Wednesday: September 12th, 2018
WWW Wednesday
Holy crap, this semester is keeping me insanely busy! I’ve gotten so much reading homework, and while it’s interesting most of the time, it’s not what I truly want to be reading and ahhh, my brain feels like it’s turning to mush.
I’m already failing at my plan to post semiweekly but I wanted to make sure I at least hopped on to WordPress real quick tonight (it’s currently midnight in my time zone) to give you guys a quick update on all that I’m reading (and not reading) currently.
Hopefully I’ll be back again this weekend with a book review or book tag! 🤞
For those of you who don’t know: WWW Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where you answer 3 ‘what’ questions about your reading.
What are you currently reading?
  • Hybrid Creatures: Stories- Started reading this story collection for my fiction writing class. The author is visiting campus in a couple of weeks and I can’t wait to hear him talk!
  • Rule- I’m only 7% in, but I can already see why this book is getting poor reviews, but alas, I have an e-ARC I must review.
  • Love Medicine- Another short story collection that my fiction writing class is reading. The collection follows two Native American families and I’m starting to get really invested in these characters. I can’t wait to read more about them!
  • Ruin and Rising- Slowly making my way through this reread…
  • Celtic Tales- Wow, it’s been awhile since I last read a story from here, but we’re still gonna count this as “currently reading”, shhh.
What did you just finish reading?
2461713
First book down for my college courses this semester! This is the 2nd Jane Austen book I’ve read (the other being Pride and Prejudice a few years ago). I really enjoyed the characters and the story, but I must be honest; I was not a fan of the time it took for me to read this book (getting use to the language every time I sat down to read took me awhile).
The characters of Elinor and Edward though. 😍 I can’t wait to watch the movie adaptation later this week and see all this characters brought to life! (it’s a homework assignment! Praise the lord, I’m soooo excited)
What do you think you’ll read next?
As I just mentioned, part of my homework for my Jane Austen class this week is to watch the movie adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which we’re following with readings from a book about the screenplay and how the movie was produced!
In regards to “fun reading”, I will be reading To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before again this year (I literally just read this on July 31st) for my book club (which I am the co-founder and co-president for– aren’t I fancy?). Ahhh, I can’t wait to talk about this book with other people in real life (and perhaps this time around I’ll actually write & post a review for the book? We’ll see…)
Oh gosh, I just know this post is full of awkward sentences and grammatical errors, but I’m too tired to read over this post ten millions like I usually do (sorry!). I need sleep so I can pay attention in my grammar class tomorrow! 😁
What books are you currently reading? Are you back in school? How’s it going?
If you made a WWW Wednesday post this week, feel free to link it up in the comments below, I would love to read them!
